Italian Photographer Luigi Visconti has created a new series of photographs based around the serene yet powerful quarries of Carrara, Tuscany. Luigi will be showcasing first seen images of the Quarries alongside his cityscape photography of New York, Cuba and Hong Kong.
This serie about marble quarries is a relatively recent development with the major influence of photographers like Burtynsky, being the starting point.
I went for this new project to the marble quarries of Carrara and Pietrasanta (Tuscany) dreaming of Michelangelo. Some of these quarries were at almost two hours walk from any accessible roads. During these journeys I was so impressed by the spiritual silence, broken up only by the echoes of my camera’s shutter, and so enthusiastic about the white and immaculate marble of these quarries, among the oldest and most prestigious, that I returned several times to try to catch the perfect light.
